Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, is the subject here, and this print reproduces a painting by Thomas Sully, the Philadelphia portraitist who painted many of the leading figures of the early republic. Sully's Jefferson portrait is a well-known likeness, and reproductions like this one carried the image of the author of the Declaration of Independence into homes, schools and libraries long after the original was made. The caption card gives no date, so the print's exact age is uncertain, but its source is a painting Sully produced during the 19th century, when engraved and printed copies of presidential portraits were widely circulated.
