Carlu, a French designer who had settled in the United States, built this poster around the slogan "Production, America's answer!" in 1941, when the country was still officially neutral but was rapidly expanding its defense output. The Office for Emergency Management's Division of Information commissioned it to press the message that factories and workers, not only soldiers, would decide the outcome of the war. Its appeal to industrial effort reflects the broader push to convert American plants to war goods before Pearl Harbor.
