The print takes its title from the United Mine Workers of America, the union that organized coal miners across the country after its founding in 1890. Its shelflist card links it to the Chicago firm Kurz & Allison, a commercial lithography house that produced many popular color prints in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The record gives no date, so the image is best understood against the union's early decades, when mining communities fought for wages, safer conditions, and recognition of the right to organize.
