Few things in industrial photography capture the underground working life of the early twentieth century as directly as a tunnel lined with rail track running into the dark. Here the tracks carry ore and coal cars out of the working face, and above them a "SAFETY FIRST" sign hangs as a reminder of the hazards miners faced daily. The slogan was widely promoted by mining companies and safety organizations in the years after 1910, when accident rates and public concern pushed employers toward formal safety programs. Pictures like this one show how those campaigns reached the workers themselves, placed right in the passageways where injuries were most likely to happen.
