Printed as a color woodcut in 1936, this safety poster carries a credit to the Federal Music Project, an unexpected sponsor for a message about accidents and caution. The Works Progress Administration, renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939, employed artists to make posters for government agencies and community groups, and public safety was a common theme. Woodcut was one of several printmaking methods the program used, alongside the silkscreen techniques it is more often associated with. A date stamp on the back, March 27, 1937, shows the sheet was in use or on file within a year of printing.
