The slogan, "Stand by the boys in the trenches: Mine more coal," ties the work of digging coal directly to the fighting in France. Issued by the United States Fuel Administration as No. 6 in its poster series, this 1918 color lithograph was printed in Chicago by Edwards & Deutsch and credits Walter Whitehead. The agency was urging miners to raise output during wartime fuel shortages, when coal powered factories, railways and shipping that supported American troops and their allies. The design presents the miner as a soldier on the home front.
