Harry and Bessie Houdini appear together on this 1895 color lithograph, which promises a "Metamorphosis" in which two performers change places in three seconds. The New York firm Liebler & Maass printed the poster, billing the pair as "The Houdinis" and calling their act "the only and original." The Metamorphosis, in which Bessie was bound and shut inside a trunk and Harry emerged in her place, became one of the couple's most popular vaudeville routines. The poster offers a glimpse of the early years of Houdini's career, when he was still building the reputation that later made his name synonymous with escape.
