Joe Jones's *Wastelands* turns to the abandoned farmland of the Depression years, showing rusting agricultural machinery left standing in ground that no longer yields a crop. Made around 1937, the lithograph belongs to a period when drought and dust storms on the Great Plains drove many families off their land, and artists of the decade often used rural decline to comment on economic hardship. Jones signed the image directly on the stone, and the print was distributed through the American Artists Group, which sold affordable prints to bring socially engaged art to a wide audience. Its bleak, empty landscape is worth studying for how it makes equipment itself stand in for the people who have gone.
