Derricks crowd the sky above the rooftops in this wide view, and the panoramic format carries the eye from the nearest wells out to the far edge of the field. Scenes like this were common in the boomtowns that grew up around new oil discoveries, such as Spindletop near Beaumont, Texas, in 1901, where wells, storage tanks and housing went up faster than roads and water lines could follow. Panoramas of this kind were often made to show the scale of a field to readers and investors, and today they record how tightly drilling and daily town life were packed together.
