The Long Beach Oil Field was one of the most dramatic strikes in American history, and this May 1923 view captures it at the height of the boom. Oil was discovered on the city's outskirts in 1921, and within a few years the field was producing a large share of the nation's petroleum, drawing crews, rigs and speculators into a town that had been mostly a seaside resort. Look closely at the crowded derricks and the tangle of pipe and access roads, which show how quickly the land was being claimed for extraction.
