An oil derrick in Oklahoma, made around 1922, is the subject here, and it was photographed by G.H. Farnum of Okeman, Oklahoma, a local photographer whose work was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. By the early 1920s Oklahoma was one of the leading oil-producing states, and the boom drew wildcatters, drillers, and supply towns to the region almost overnight. Pictures like this one recorded the steel towers and pumping equipment that defined those fields, giving a view of an industry that was reshaping the state's economy and landscape.
