Signed and dated in crayon in the upper right corner, this color silkscreen by Elizabeth Olds shows a single miner named Joe rather than a crowd of workers, which gives the subject a personal presence. Olds, a New York artist who worked with the Federal Art Project in the 1930s, made many portraits of laborers, and silkscreen was a medium the New Deal arts programs promoted because it could produce bright, affordable multiples. The print belongs to the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Collection at the Library of Congress and was included in a 1999 exhibition of American realist prints.
