Addressed directly to the coal and metal miner, this 1917 lithograph carries a quotation attributed to President Woodrow Wilson, which argues that the men who dig the raw material stand alongside farmers in the war effort. Printed in Washington, D.C., by the A.B. Graham Company and issued under Interior Secretary Franklin K. Lane, it appeared after the United States entered the war in April 1917, when mineral and fuel output was seen as essential to supplying Allied armies and American industry. The poster's flag imagery and its phrase "enlisted in the great service army" show how the government sought to recast ordinary labor as a form of national service.
