This poster is unusual for its time because it has no illustration at all, only six numbered instructions in large lettering: buy with thought, cook with care, use less wheat and meat, buy local foods, serve just enough, and use what is left. It was issued by the U.S. Food Administration, the wartime agency headed by Herbert Hoover, which was created in 1917 to manage food supplies and encourage voluntary conservation at home. Shipping overseas to feed Allied armies and civilians made wheat and meat scarce, so the government asked families to change their habits rather than relying on rationing. The poster was printed in color by lithography by the W. F. Powers Co. of New York.
