The "Juicy Gems" name sets this crate label apart from the many apple labels on the board, and it was printed to catch a shopper's eye on a crowded produce stand. Heller Bros. used the brand to sell its fruit under a memorable name. Lithographed crate labels like this one were pasted to the ends of wooden shipping boxes from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s, when color printing was cheap enough for growers to market fruit by brand rather than by variety alone. Such labels often pictured bright fruit, orchard scenes, or idealized domestic imagery, and today they offer a window into how packers sold produce to buyers.
