Sebastopol, in Sonoma County, California, was once known for its apple orchards, and the Jackie Boy Brand crate label from the Furusho Brothers packing operation is a small window into that trade. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Japanese American families played a substantial part in California's fruit industry in the early twentieth century, and labels such as this one reflect the branding and marketing work that went into getting produce to market. The design is worth a close look for its bold lettering and bright color, which were meant to stand out on a crowded produce shelf.
