Sebastopol is a town in Sonoma County, California, and the "Sebastopol Diamond Brand" name points to the orchards that once ringed it, where growers shipped apples in wooden crates to distant markets. Crate labels like this one were printed in bright color lithography, partly to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded fruit stand and partly to tell a shopper where the fruit came from. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the apple trade in the Sonoma and Santa Rosa area was a major part of the regional economy, and labels of this kind document the local growers' pride in their name and their produce.
