The name Juicy Gems, along with the pairing of Wenatchee and New York, marks this as a shipping label meant to sell one brand of apples to buyers far from the orchard. Wenatchee, in central Washington's Columbia River valley, grew into a major apple district in the early twentieth century, and shippers relied on colorful lithographed crate labels to stand out in crowded eastern markets. Such labels were printed in large runs and discarded once the crates were emptied, so surviving examples now draw collectors. The Heller Bros. name shows how one firm packaged its fruit for distant buyers.
