Wenatchee, in north-central Washington, built much of its early reputation on apples, and this crate label for the Mt. Cashmere brand is a small piece of that story. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that a grower's fruit could stand out on crowded railcars and in city grocery displays. Their bright chromolithographed artwork, often featuring landscapes, flowers or fanciful figures, was designed to make buyers reach for one brand over another. Mount Cashmere, the peak that rises above the Wenatchee Valley, gave the label its name and its local identity.
