Few crate labels from the early twentieth century carry a brand name as plainly as this one, with the MOUNTAIN mark set large across the face for buyers to spot from a distance. The label was printed for Duthie and Company of Portland, Oregon, a shipper that packed and sent apples from the Pacific Northwest to eastern markets. Labels like this were pasted to the ends of wooden crates, where their bold colors and pictured orchard scenes helped a grower's fruit stand out on crowded railway platforms and grocers' shelves. Today such labels are valued both as small works of commercial art and as records of how Oregon's apple trade sold itself before the modern supermarket.
