Mountain Lady was one of the brand names that Tuolumne County growers printed on their apple crate labels, a reminder that the Sierra foothills once shipped a real share of California's fruit. Crate labels like this one were colorful lithographed advertisements, designed to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded grocer's shelf and to promote a particular orchard or packing association. Many of these labels from the early twentieth century now survive mainly as printed ephemera, and they offer a useful look at how growers marketed their fruit to distant markets by rail.
