Bob White was one of the many apple-crate brands that Pennsylvania and Virginia growers printed on the ends of their shipping boxes, and this label carries the York County name that tied it to a specific orchard region. Crate labels like this one were made by commercial lithographers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when rail shipping let growers send fruit to distant city markets. Bright chromolithographed art was meant to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded produce stand, so the label did as much selling as the apples inside. Today such labels are valued as examples of early commercial printing and as a record of regional fruit farming.
