Start with the name on the label itself: Academy Brand, a crate label for apples packed by the Sunlit Fruit Co. of Berkeley, California. Crate labels like this one were pasted to the ends of wooden shipping boxes in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when California growers sent fruit by rail to eastern markets and needed a brand that buyers would recognize across the country.
