Yum-Yum was the brand name stamped on this crate label, and the cheerful wording was a deliberate pitch to grocers and shoppers alike. Crate labels like this one were printed in bright colors and pasted onto wooden boxes so that a buyer could recognize a grower's fruit from across a warehouse or store aisle. Apple labels of this kind flourished in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when railroads carried produce to distant city markets and growers competed on appearance as much as quality. Look closely at the lithographed illustration and typography, which show how commercial art was used to sell an ordinary crate of fruit.
