The title names the sitter, Running Horse, and the caption card places him among the Sioux (Lakota) and links the portrait to ceremonial dress. Around 1900, studio portraits of Plains men in regalia sold widely to a public curious about Native life, and many were made in large numbers. This print carries a U.S. Copyright Office deposit mark, which indicates it was submitted to register the image for copyright. The date and photographer attribution come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the circumstances of the sitting remain uncertain.
