Cutaway views like this one reveal a theater's inner workings all at once, with the stage, orchestra pit, tiers of seating and upper galleries laid open in a single sectional drawing. Diagrams of this kind were common in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when new playhouses were rising in cities on both sides of the Atlantic and builders had to balance sightlines, ventilation and crowd flow. The stacked balconies show how such buildings were arranged to hold large audiences while keeping most seats close enough to see and hear the performers.
