Few pictures on this board show what lies beneath a building, and this plan does just that by drawing the foundation story of a combined theater and hotel. A foundation plan records the footings and load-bearing walls at the lowest level, the work that disappears from view once the upper floors go up. Buildings that housed a playhouse alongside guest rooms were common in busy city centers in the 19th century, and their mixed uses meant the foundations had to carry the heavy load of an auditorium along with the weight of multiple guest floors. The lines on the sheet show how builders planned that ground-level support before any ornament or stage machinery was added.
