This watercolor shows a theater and hotel building in Richmond, Virginia, a combination that was common in early American cities, where a single structure could host plays, concerts, and lodging for travelers. The record dates it to the late 1790s, a period when Richmond was growing as the new state capital and theatrical performance was still gaining a foothold in the young republic. The cross-section view, with figures placed inside the building, lets viewers see how the audience spaces and rooms were arranged. The Richmond theater later became widely remembered after a fire in December 1811 killed dozens of people during a performance.
