Few pictures on this board pair a playhouse with a hotel under one roof, and this one shows a building in Richmond, Virginia, that combined both uses. Mixed theater-and-lodging buildings were common in American cities in the nineteenth century, when a playhouse often shared a block with a hotel that housed traveling performers and visitors. Richmond was a stop on many touring routes, so a building like this would have drawn local audiences and out-of-town guests alike. The available details do not give a construction date or architect, so its exact period remains uncertain.
