This glass negative is catalogued under the names Capt. Baylis and Mary Watkins, but the Bain News Service that made it attached that title from data it did not verify, so the identities and occasion remain uncertain. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds the work of a New York news photo agency active in the early twentieth century, which supplied pictures of current events and notable people to newspapers. Glass plates were the standard medium for press photographs of the period, and with no firm date recorded, researchers would need to compare it with neighboring negatives and agency records to place it in time.
