Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the caption, which names Denis F.H. Bowen as a captain of engineers, though that identification comes from unverified notes made by the Bain News Service. The Bain agency, based in New York, produced news and portrait pictures on glass negatives in the early twentieth century, and officers of the army's engineer branch were often photographed for newspapers covering military construction and mobilization. With no date on record, the sitter's dress and bearing are the best clues to the period. The glass negative itself is worth noting, since it was a fragile medium that captured fine detail for later printing.
