The caption names this sitter as Capt. Adelaide B. Baylis, though the Bain News Service recorded that title as unverified, so the identification and her rank should be read with some caution. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York agency's large body of news photographs made from about the turn of the twentieth century into the 1920s. Women who held military or organizational titles were still unusual in press photographs of that period, which makes a portrait like this worth a closer look. Its date is not recorded, so the setting and the circumstances of the sitting remain open questions.
