The record gives this glass negative only the name "Mary Browne," and notes that the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote without verification, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. The plate is a small-format negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, the kind of glass plate the Bain agency used for quick portraits and news work in New York in the early 1900s. George Grantham Bain built the company in the years before 1915, and its files now form one of the largest early photojournalism archives in the country. Because the date is unknown, the picture is best read as a window onto that studio's everyday output rather than as a documented event.
