The sitter is recorded only as E.P. Ladd, and that name comes from caption cards the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, so the identification has not been independently confirmed. The glass plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures that the Bain News Service produced and distributed in New York in the early twentieth century, when agencies like it supplied newspapers with portraits and scenes of current events. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the glass-plate format places it before film became standard for press work.
