Four people sharing the Elman surname are named in the caption for this glass negative, and the violinist Mischa Elman is the best known of them. He rose to fame in the early 1900s, touring Europe and the United States with a warm, singing tone that made him a popular concert draw. The negative was made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs. The record gives no date, and the names come from unverified caption cards, so the occasion and each sitter's role remain uncertain.
