The name on this glass negative, Col. John Y. Byrne, comes from caption information recorded by the Bain News Service, and the record notes that it is unverified. The plate is 5 x 7 inches or smaller, a format the agency used widely for news pictures sent to newspapers in the early twentieth century. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York around 1899 to supply quickly made photographs of current events and public figures. Its files later passed to the Library of Congress, which holds them as the George Grantham Bain Collection.
