The only identification for this glass negative is the name John Dillon, and the Library of Congress notes that even this title comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, part of the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that Bain established around 1899 to supply newspapers with news photographs. Because the agency worked on glass plates, its surviving negatives are often the main record of the people and events it covered, and researchers usually have to check them against caption cards and period newspapers to confirm who is pictured and when.
