Ralph H. Upson is the subject here, a portrait of one of the aeronautical engineers and balloonists who helped shape American lighter-than-air flight in the early twentieth century. The record does not give a date, but the Bain News Service, which made this negative, supplied news photographs of prominent people and events from roughly 1905 to 1915. Upson's work on balloons and airships, including his association with the Goodyear company's aeronautics program, placed him among a small group of engineers whose designs and races drew wide press attention in those years. The glass negative format is typical of that era's news studio work.
