Herbert Hoover's inauguration on March 4, 1929, is the event this print records, and the caption names three people: Hoover, Mrs. Hoover, and former president William Howard Taft. Taft, who had been Hoover's predecessor's predecessor in the White House's sequence of chief executives and was then serving as Chief Justice of the United States, administered the oath of office that day, which makes him a natural figure to appear beside the new president. The reviewing stand, a temporary structure built for parade spectators in Washington, D.C., is the setting, and it was typical of the inaugural ceremonies of the 1920s. The photograph came from the National Photo Company, a studio that documented Washington life in those years.
