Catalogued simply as "Hoover," this glass negative is attributed to Herbert Hoover, the 31st president, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded and has not been independently verified. George Grantham Bain's New York agency supplied newspapers with news pictures, and its glass negatives were typically made quickly and captioned for publication. The record gives no date, but Hoover served from 1929 to 1933, a period dominated by the Great Depression and heavy press attention to the White House. Glass negatives of this kind captured fine detail, which is why they remain valuable to researchers.
