Where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge, the Water Gap forms a deep notch of steep, wooded cliffs, and this work presents that landscape through illustrations by Granville Perkins. Perkins was an American illustrator who worked widely for magazines and travel books in the decades after the Civil War. Scenes like these helped make the gap a destination for visitors arriving by rail and steamboat, when hotels and resorts in the region were drawing city travelers. Worth noticing is how the engravings turn a working river passage into a picturesque view.
