The Delaware Water Gap is a notch cut through Kittatinny Ridge where the Delaware River forces its way between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and this view looks south from the Shawnee side of the river, with the wooded ridgeline framing the water below. Shawnee, on the New Jersey bank, grew into a resort village in the 19th century after visitors arrived by rail and steamboat to see the scenery. Such vistas drew painters and early tourists alike, and the gap remains one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the region.
