Diana's Bath is a cascade in the woods of the Delaware Water Gap area, where a stream tumbles over rock into a pool that visitors have long treated as a secluded place to swim and linger. The name borrows from Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, a classical reference popular in the 1800s, when travelers often gave scenic spots mythological names. After the railroad reached the Water Gap in the mid-1800s, the area grew into a summer resort, and falls like this one drew hikers and picnickers looking for a retreat from the river hotels. Notice how the water, rock and trees are arranged to suggest a wild, untouched place.
