Water tumbling over rock and through a tangle of trees sets this engraving's subject apart, a cataract framed by woodland in the Delaware Water Gap region. Scenes like this drew a public eager to see the rugged landscape of northeastern Pennsylvania, which was attracting more visitors by the early 1800s. Engravers usually worked from sketches made on site, and the finished plates were printed in quantity for books, periodicals and travel views. The artist's emphasis on churning water and dense foliage conveys the wildness that made the Gap appealing to travelers.
