The railway in this view is the Switchback, a gravity line that carried coal from the Summit Hill mines down to Mauch Chunk, a town wedged into a steep valley of the Lehigh River. Opened in 1827, the line let loaded cars roll downhill under their own weight, while mules hauled the empty cars back up the grade. The track bends and climbs across the wooded slope, showing how engineers fitted the route to the rugged terrain instead of leveling it.
