This view shows the highway through Mauch Chunk, the Carbon County borough that grew up in the Lehigh River valley around the anthracite coal trade. In the nineteenth century the town was a busy shipping point, and its steep hillsides held one of America's early gravity railways, which carried coal cars down to the river. The town was renamed Jim Thorpe in 1954, after the Olympic athlete who was later buried there. The road in the picture reflects how the valley's transport moved from rail and canal toward automobiles.
