The view here puts the river's notch through Kittatinny Ridge at the center of the frame, a gap the Delaware River cut over a very long span of time and the reason the borough takes its name. By the late 1800s, the scenery drew painters, tourists, and summer visitors who arrived by rail and stayed in riverside hotels. Distant views like this one often show how the landscape looked to those visitors, who treated the water gap as a natural wonder to be seen from the right vantage point.
