Williamsburg's colonial courthouse, on Duke of Gloucester Street near the Capitol end of town, is shown here after its restoration in the 1930s, when the old capital was being rebuilt to its eighteenth-century appearance. The building housed local courts in the years when Williamsburg was Virginia's colonial capital, and it is one of the civic buildings that restoration work brought back into view. The photograph documents the finished exterior, with its brick walls and simple classical lines, at a moment when the town was becoming a major site for studying colonial architecture. The record notes that its caption information is unverified, so details of the exact date and campaign are best checked against other sources.
