Three red apples fill the center of this crate label, set against a bright field of color that was meant to catch a buyer's eye across a crowded packing shed or railway platform. Oak Glen is a fruit-growing district in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, and in the early twentieth century its orchards shipped apples in wooden crates to markets far away. Labels like this one were printed by lithographers and pasted onto crate ends, so the picture did the work that a brand name does today. The record does not name the printer, but the bold, simple design is typical of the period's crate art.
