Los Rios Rancho's crate label for Oak Glen apples is a reminder of how fruit was sold before supermarkets and refrigerated trucks. Oak Glen is a mountain community in the San Bernardino range of Southern California, and its orchards, planted in the late 1800s, shipped apples by rail to markets across the West. Crate labels like this one did the advertising work of the day: bright color lithography, a brand name, and a scenic or fruit-centered design meant to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded produce dock. Look at the lettering and layout, which show how growers tried to tie a local place to a product they hoped shoppers would trust.
